Worldwide SourcesWhere does the raw material come from, to be melted at Affi's?Affi does not operate a mine, it does not even hold shares of a mining enterprise. A 3.7% share of Freeport, West Papua, was sold in 1990. Ore concentrate is bought preferably on long term contracts from a couple of suppliers. In its business reports, suppliers of Affi are quoted countrywise. From this, the following table has been compiled.
In 1999/2000, total copper production made a leap, because Affi aquired the smelter "Kayser" at Luenen, Westfalia. At Luenen, only scrap is processed. Scrap input to the utility at Hamburg was decreased in favour of Luenen. In 2001, smelter capacity for ore concentrate at Hamburg was expanded from 740 000 to 1 000 000 tons/year. Since exact figures are not available, an average copper content in concentrate is applied to all countries. To find out, which mines of the different countries supply Affi, we
checked other publications, e.g. the US
Minerals Yearbook.
